COIN: Uniswap surpasses Coinbase in terms of trading volume amidst regulatory uncertainty
Coinbase, like the majority of major cryptocurrency companies currently, must navigate an uncertain regulatory landscape. Less than two weeks ago, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States was issued a "Wells Notice" by the Securities and Exchange Commission, indicating that it is likely to take action against Coinbase's alleged offering of unregistered securities in the near future. The Commodities and Futures Trading Commission has filed a lawsuit against Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, for evading regulation. Moreover, as regulatory pressures increase on centralised exchanges, decentralised exchanges are becoming more attractive.
The dispersion effect
The monthly trading volume of the most popular decentralised exchange in the world, Uniswap, surpassed $71 billion for the first time since January 2022. According to research conducted by The Block, this volume was 45 percent greater than Coinbase's in the same month. This is despite the fact that Coinbase's monthly trading volume has increased over the past month, with March demonstrating a 23% increase from February. Since the beginning of the year, decentralised exchanges have seen a greater increase in trading volume than their centralised counterparts.
Why is interest in decentralised exchanges increasing?
There are numerous causes for Uniswap's increased volume. First, the fiat value of the crypto space as a whole has been increasing since the start of the year, in part due to concerns surrounding the global banking sector and their impact on the performance of stablecoins such as USDC. The increased regulatory scrutiny of the centralised exchange sector is another factor. The relatively limited regulatory oversight of decentralised exchanges is boosting their popularity. As centralised exchanges continue to serve as a key fiat entry point for the industry, their adoption is likely to remain robust throughout the coming year.
