On the second-to-last trading day of 2022, Skyworks Solutions and Nvidia lead chips upward.
The S&P 500's best-performing semiconductor companies on Thursday included Skyworks Solutions (NASDAQ:SWKS), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), as the market as a whole and the tech sector recovered after two days of weakness.
Following news that Foxconn, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) main iPhone manufacturer, was operating at 70% capacity in the portion of its Zhengzhou, China factory where iPhones are made, Skyworks (SWKS) saw a final gain of 4.8%.
A sizable amount of Skyworks' revenue, along with Qorvo's (QRVO), comes from the iPhone. Shares of Qorvo (QRVO) ended the day up about 2.9%.
As its manufacturing partner, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), celebrated the mass production of its 3 nm technology at a ceremony in Taiwan, Nvidia (NVDA) gained more than 4%, while AMD (AMD) added 3.6%.
Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) Chairman Mark Liu spoke at the occasion and emphasised the positive reception to the 3 nm technology, as well as the fact that the company is continuing to make investments in Taiwan.
Shares of Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) finished the day up little more than 4% at $76.
As Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced she would meet with the semiconductor giant to coordinate its investment in the nation, Intel (INTC) shares closed up 2.6%.
In a news conference, Meloni stated, "In the coming days I'll endeavour to schedule a meeting, to ask Intel what we can do to facilitate their investment in Italy, which I think is incredibly strategic.
In addition to Texas Instruments (TXN), Analog Devices (ADI), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), Broadcom (AVGO), and ON Semiconductor (ON) all witnessed advances of 2% or more on Thursday.
The carefully followed Nasdaq 100 saw a number of adjustments earlier this month, including the removal of Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) from the index.
