Device shipments decline in 2022; a 4.4% decline is anticipated in 2023.
In 2023, device shipments, which include PCs, tablets, and mobile phones, are anticipated to fall by roughly 4.4% to 1.7 billion units. According to Gartner data, shipments in 2022 were down 11.9% overall.
PC shipments fell 16% in 2022, tablets fell 12%, and mobile phones fell 11%. After skyrocketing in 2022, PC inventories are predicted to return to normal levels by H2 2023. More than 25% of business PCs will switch to Windows 11, according to Gartner.
PC shipments are anticipated to decline 6.8% in 2023, tablets to decline 2.9%, and mobile phones to decline 4%. The greatest single quarter fall in smartphone shipments was down 18%.
"Throughout 2023, the weak economy will keep the demand for devices down. In fact, a 5.1% fall in end-user spending on gadgets is predicted for 2023. Business confidence has now declined dramatically in most countries just when it was starting to rise following the worst of the outbreak. According to Ranjit Atwal, senior director of analysis at Gartner, "We do not expect relief from inflation and the bottom of the recession to occur until the fourth quarter of 2023."
"In the lack of any new technology, consumers are keeping their phones longer than anticipated—from six to nine months—and switching from fixed to flexible contracts. Inflationary component costs are also being passed on to customers by vendors, which is further reducing demand. In 2023, a 3.8% decrease in end-user spending on mobile phones is anticipated, continued Atwal.
